Watch: Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed Alzarri Joseph for three sixes in an over en route to a rapid 92, which included a maximum off a 90mph delivery during the 2023 IPL opener between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans today (March 31).
Gaikwad raced away to a sublime 92 in 50 deliveries in the tournament opener, with his innings containing as many as nine sixes. The opener started aggressively, scoring 24 in the first 13 deliveries that he faced in the first powerplay, and carried on the momentum, hitting five more sixes in the next 12 balls that he faced.
He smashed two maximums off Hardik Pandya in the seventh over before taking on Joseph two overs later, hitting the speedster for three maximums in six deliveries.
The first ball read 141.5kmph in the speed-o-meter-, but Gaikwad effortlessly picked up the fuller delivery and flicked it away for a six over long leg. He brought up his fifty three balls later with another six, pulling a back of a length ball over square leg, reaching the milestone in only 23 deliveries.
Gaikwad ended the over with another big shot, hitting it over the boundary rope to score 18 runs off the over.
The bowler, however, had the last laugh as he dismissed the batter eight runs short of what would have been his second IPL ton. Chennai Super Kings ended their innings with 178-7 on the board.
