Watch: Mohammed Shami clips David Warner’s stumps with wobble-seam, late-swing top-of-off beauty, but bails stay on

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: David Warner received an almighty slice of luck early in his innings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) today (April 4), surviving despite a Mohammed Shami delivery clipping his off-stump.

The reprieve came off Warner’s first legal delivery, Shami struggling to deal with the movement on offer and sending down a combination of unplayable jaffas and wayward balls.

The first delivery was a wide, which swung further away and forced Wriddhiman Saha to complete an athletic take behind the stumps. But the second was a beauty, wobbling down, hitting the seam and when moving more after pitching. There was a clear sound as the ball passed Warner, but he was given not out by the on-field umpire.

Hardik Pandya enquired with the close-in fielders over the possibility of a review. Though Saha indicated he had heard a sound, Gujarat Titans declined to send the decision upstairs. It soon became clear why, with UltraEdge showing Warner had missed the ball, but signalling that there had been a sound as the ball passed the stumps.

There were two more wides in the over, including one that beat Saha, gifting Delhi Capitals five runs in the process. However, Warner was only able to get bat on ball twice, twice leaving alone and twice beaten. One of those connections was an edge, which flew wide of Saha for four, meaning the first over cost 11 runs.

Warner went on to make a 32-ball 37.
