Watch: ‘European Cricket League stuff’ – Jordan Cox comically bungles run out in BBL

Jordan Cox comically missed out a run out in the BBL
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper Jordan Cox was involved in a comical run out attempt, bungling a straightforward chance during their BBL game against Melbourne Stars.

The incident occurred in the 14th over of the Stars innings, when Beau Webster under-edged an Adam Zampa delivery onto Cox’s pads. As Cox staggered to one side, the ball rolled towards short third man, where fielder Shaun Marsh dived and hurled it back underarm.

By then, non-striker Hilton Cartwright had called Webster out of his crease, but Marsh’s quickness led to confusion in the middle. Webster was midway down the pitch when Cartwright seemingly changed his mind, and both batters gave up mid-pitch when they saw the ball return towards Cox.

The 23-year-old, Kent-born Cox didn’t seem too prepared though: the return came in a flash, to which he reacted slightly late, using one hand to parry the ball to the stumps. He comically ended up smashing his glove on the stumps without collecting the ball, giving enough time to the stupefied Webster to scamper back to his crease.

The ball rolled to point, where Akeal Hosein chased it – as did Cox – but by then, Webster had made his way back. Marsh, still on the ground, couldn’t believe it. Neither could Zampa.

“That’s not on at this level.” commentator Wasim Akram said. Mark Waugh compared the fielding effort to the infamous European Cricket League: “That’s European Cricket League stuff, those blokes would be disappointed with that.”

The Renegades had finished their innings on 137-8.
