Northamptonshire have confirmed that Prithvi Shaw will be coming back to play for them in the next county season, in 2024.

Shaw signed up with the Northants for the One-Day Cup earlier this season but was ruled out after getting off to a brilliant start. He played four games, scoring 429 runs from them at an average of 143.

He reached three figures twice in four innings at the 2023 One-Day Cup – a record-shattering 244 off 153 balls against Somerset and an unbeaten 125 against Durham. His double-century knock is the sixth-highest individual score ever in the history of List A cricket.

However, his promising stint was cut short due to a knee injury that he sustained during the Durham match. Shaw got injured while fielding during the first innings, yet, was able to come out to bat and score an unbeaten century taking his team to victory.

He has now signed a new deal with the club for the One-Day cup as well as the County Championship in 2024. “I’m so excited to be heading back to Northamptonshire next summer,” said Shaw. “Even though it was over quickly I really enjoyed my time there. It’s a great club to be a part of and I felt so welcome by everyone immediately. I can’t wait to get back over.”

Other clubs had also contacted Shaw for his performances in the summer of 2023, but he was determined to return to the club that gave him the first opportunity: “I had a few teams contacting me after the tournament wanting to talk about playing for them next year, but I feel like I still have more to achieve with Northamptonshire. They gave me the opportunity this year and I’m very happy to be coming back.”

Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler heaped praise on Shaw’s abilities: “Prithvi is a phenomenal talent and what he delivered for us in such a short space of time was incredible. He was utterly disappointed not to stay longer due to his injury as he wanted to play some red-ball cricket, so the chance for him to do this next year is really exciting for us all.”
