Curran, who has been leading Punjab Kings in the second half of the season after Shikhar Dhawan’s shoulder injury, gave his side an early advantage by sending back Jaiswal for another low score. The left-handed opener, who hit the England all-rounder for a four on the first ball, tried to drive the delivery by Curran away from the body but only managed an inside edge against the ball that swung back in at the last minute. Jaiswal was not able to get his feet moving on the shot and departed for a run-a-ball four, much to the delight of the bowler, who kept looking towards Jaiswal while whirling his fingers in the air.
Jaiswal’s early departure was a double blow to the Royals, who have lost their last three games in a row. They were also without Jos Buttler, with the England skipper having returned for national duty. His replacement Tom Kohler-Cadmore was unable to leave a mark either, making 18 in 23 deliveries. Jaiswal’s poor run of form also poses a concern to the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup, with their other opener Rohit Sharma also not amongst the runs.
After a stellar season last year, where Jaiswal made 625 runs at an average of 48.08 and a strike rate of 163.61, he has managed to average just 29 this year with one hundred and one half-century.
