Watch: Jonty Rhodes continued his excellent record of utility in the field, with the Lucknow Super Giant’s fielding coach helping out the ground staff as they raced to get the covers on, during a rain-affected IPL 2023 game.

Rain curtailed the Lucknow’s IPL clash against Chennai Super Kings before it was halfway through, the weather interrupting proceedings in the final over of LSG’s innings.
As the ground staff rushed to pull the covers onto the outfield before the rain soaked into the playing area, they received some welcome help from the legendary cricketer. The former South Africa international ran over to the ground staff, who were attempting to pull the covers over the boundary rope.
Leading several other members of the ground staff in his wake, he commandeered a bolstered team as they yanked the covers out from their rolled-up storage. As he waved the covers up and down, presumably to loosen them, another one of the ground staff team arrived to take over, but had some difficulty prising the covers out of Rhodes’ hands.
Eventually, Rhodes released his grip but continued to lead the team as they pulled the covers further onto the field. Spotting another opportunity with a vacant handle dragging on the ground, he quickly sprinted back to join the pullers once more. The second time around, he did not release until the covers were safely over the pitch.
Rhodes was well known during his career for miraculous achievements in the field. Arguably his most famous on-field moment was his ‘superman’ runout of Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 1992 World Cup, where he sprinted with the ball and dived full length to demolish the stumps.
