Marks out of 10: Player ratings for India in the World Test Championship final

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

In the summit clash of the maiden World Test Championship, the Indians came up short as they went down to New Zealand. Here are the player ratings of India from the final.

Shubman Gill: 6/10

28 & 8

The youngster, in his maiden Test in England, showed no signs of nerves as he saw off the new ball in the first innings with a well-made 28 off 64. He didn’t shy away from sending the short balls away for four and crisply punched away the inswingers to the boundary. The New Zealand bowlers erred in the first hour on Day 2, and Gill made the most of the chances. He also grabbed a brilliant catch in the field, which gives him a point more.

Rohit Sharma: 6/10

34 & 30

The Indian opener went some way to silencing the critics who had questioned his skills in English conditions. He looked comfortable as he flicked away the deliveries angling in and impressed by standing out of the crease to negate the swing. He ended with 64 runs in the game.

Cheteshwar Pujara: 3/10

8 & 15

While the scores are little to shout about, Pujara did his new-ball blunting job well, eating up 134 balls across both innings. However, questions hang over just how valuable such an approach is in conditions that will always be a battle.

Ajinkya Rahane: 6/10

49 & 15

Rahane’s 49 was crucial in the first innings, but he was dismissed off a careless shot in the second innings when the team would have wanted him to hold the fort. He took a sharp catch in the first innings off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling as well.

Virat Kohli: 7/10

44 & 14

The Indian skipper gets most of his points due to his captaincy tactics and decisions, which were often on the mark. He was seen charged up on the field and looked solid with the bat in both innings, though a big score still eludes him.

Rishabh Pant: 5/10

4 & 41

The wicketkeeper was important to India’s chances in the second innings and did well to get a fine 41 off 88 deliveries. He was dismissed while looking to take on Trent Boult and would have hoped for more support from the top-order. Kept tidily too, an improvement on his last outing with the gloves in England.

Ravichandran Ashwin: 7/10

2-28 & 2-17, 22 & 7

The off-spinner’s selection was much-debated, but he justified his place on a pitch that did not give much assistance to him. He got turn, and gave India hope with two wickets in the second innings. He also counter-attacked for his knock of 22 off 27 in the first innings.

Ravindra Jadeja: 3/10

1-20 & 2-25, 15 & 16

The all-rounder just bowled 7.2 overs in the first innings and gave away runs at over three in the second innings. Though he did make two starts with the bat, overall, Jadeja failed to live up to his billing in the game, and there will be calls for Hanuma Vihari to take his place in seam-dominated contests to come.

Mohammad Shami: 8/10

4-76 & 0-31, 4* & 13

The fast bowler was the star of the first innings, getting his lengths and line perfect. He set up BJ Watling with an away-seamer and dismissed Colin de Grandhomme with a ball that came back in sharply off the seam. Questioned for his effectiveness in the conditions, Shami stood tall.

Ishant Sharma: 6/10

3-48 & 0-21, 4 & 1*

Ishant got the ball to move away with a bit of bounce to surprise batters in the first innings. He got awkward bounce and was threatening for most parts.

Jasprit Bumrah: 2/10

0-57 & 0-35, 0 & 0

India’s attack leader had a rare indifferent outing, just when the team would have wanted more from him. With Shami and Ishant going great guns, Bumrah was unable to keep up the tempo from his end, which allowed the pressure to release.
