Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj bowled beautifully in the first session, beating both edges multiple times. Siraj also snared Usman Khawaja for a duck, and Australia were 20-1 after 12 overs.

However, David Warner, the other opener, broke the shackles when Umesh Yadav came on to bowl. He creamed Umesh’s second ball for four. He then cut loose in Umesh’s next over, hitting him for four fours.

The second ball of the 15th over by Umesh was short, which Warner cut past point for a four. Umesh kept Warner quiet off the next ball, but Warner struck three successive boundaries thereafter, as Umesh erred with his length.

Warner scored 16 runs in the over as Australia moved to 54-1 after the end of 15 overs. Shardul Thakur eventually got him for a 60-ball 43 as KS Bharat claimed a swift, low catch.

At the time of writing, Australia were 80-3, with Steve Smith (4) and Travis Head (4) at the crease.
