Australia won the only Test match between the countries by 89 runs to take a 4-0 lead in the multi-format Ashes, being contested for 16 points. They also won the first T20I to stretch the lead to 6-0 before England bounced back with consecutive wins to reduce the margin to 6-4.

The two teams will now play three ODIs, at the County Ground in Bristol on July 12, the Rose Bowl in Southampton on July 16, and the County Ground in Taunton on July 18.

If all ODIs are played to a finish, England need to win the series ODIs to regain the Ashes by a 10-6 margin. A 2-1 win will help them draw the multi-format series 8-8, but Australia will continue to retain the urn.
