Siraj was struck on the pad by Jomel Warrican after missing a sweep shot, but was given not out by umpire Richard Kettleborough. The West Indies decided to send the call upstairs, despite being down to their final review.
On replay, the ball looked to be close to hitting Siraj’s font pad outside the line before deflecting onto his back leg. It had pitched comfortably outside off stump and Siraj had planted his front leg well across his stumps, getting outside the line. However, UltraEdge did not pick up any sound as the ball passed the front pad, and despite an apparent deflection, the first impact was taken as being on Siraj’s back leg, in line with the stumps.
The ball also proved to be going on to hit middle stump. Richard Kettleborough subsequently had to reverse his decision and give Siraj out. Ashwin was unhappy with the decision and attempted to review the ball tracking verdict. This is not the first time Ashwin has attempted to overturn a TV umpire’s decision. In the Tamil Nadu Premier League last month, he unsuccessfully tried to overturn a review over an outside edge.
Unsurprisingly, this time Ashwin was also unsuccessful in persuading the umpires to change their minds after the original review had been taken.
