Watch: In a strange turn of events, two reviews were taken off a single ball in a TNPL 2023 game between Ba11sy Trichy and Dindigul Dragons yesterday (June 14) with R Ashwin being at the centre of it all.

Ashwin landed in Chennai just two days after India’s World Test Championship Final loss in London and turned up for his TNPL team, the Dindigul Dragons, last night (June 14).

Trichy won the toss and elected to bat first. Ashwin had an immediate impact on the game as he bowled a wicket maiden in the fourth over of the innings.

Having already made his presence felt in the game, Ashwin then got involved in a hardly-ever-seen-before incident in cricket in the 13th over.

On the last ball of the 13th over, he floated up a carrom ball at close to yorker length. R Rajkumar, the batter, swung and seemingly got an outside edge through to the wicketkeeper.

The on-field umpire ruled him out, but Rajkumar was quick to avail the first review in TNPL history. Replays suggested that the noise that came was of the bat hitting the ground. This prompted the TV umpire to instruct the on-field umpire to reverse his decision.

Ashwin, however, was not happy with the TV umpire’s judgement and wanted to have another look. Right after the on-field umpire signalled not out, Ashwin made the ‘T-sign’ and challenged the decision, forcing the umpires to go through the review process once more, much to the amazement of everyone watching.

The second review yielded the same result as the TV umpire checked the same camera angles and ruled that there was a gap between the bat and the ball when UltraEdge showed a spike.

The on-field umpire signalled not out once again as the players moved on and continued with the game. Eventually, Trichy were bowled out for 120 and Dindigul chased the target with more than five overs remaining.

In the post-match presentation, Ashwin explained his reasoning behind going for the second review. He said that the spikes on UltraEdge appear just before the ball is next to the bat even when there’s an edge, and that he wasn’t convinced if there was enough evidence to overturn the on-field call. He went ahead with the review hoping that the TV umpire would look at different angles and come to a different conclusion.
