Watch: West Indies fielder flies to take horizontal, full-stretch screamer at point in U19 World Cup

West Indies captain Stephan Pascal takes a horizontal catch (L) and celebrates (R) in the Under-19 World Cup

Watch: West Indies Under-19 captain Stephan Pascal took a contender for catch of the tournament in his side’s washout against Australia in the U19 World Cup.

Only 4.3 overs of West Indies’ chase were possible due to rain, Australia having made 227-8 earlier in the game. Pascal was dismissed for eight in that time, but had already left his mark on the contest, taking a blinding catch at point, leaping full stretch and grabbing the ball when parallel to the ground.

Raf MacMillan, Australia’s second top scorer, was the batter dismissed. He had made 29 when he aimed a cut shot at a short, wide delivery from Isai Thorne. The ball was there to be hit, and MacMillan made a good connection. But he reckoned without Pascal, who flew to his left, caught the ball, and then launched it away in celebration, floppy hat and sunglasses somehow staying in place throughout.

The no result, however, hurt West Indies’ chances. A win would have seen them equal South Africa and Australia on six points, with semi-final progression then dependent on net run rate. Instead, the points being shared means the Proteas and the Aussies will contest the semi-finals against two of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
