India’s No.4 walked in with his side in trouble at 26-2, and saw them slide further to 49-5. However, Suryakumar, the third-ranked batter in the ICC T20I rankings, stood firm, striking three sixes and six fours on his way to a 40-ball 68.

The last of those sixes stood out. Ngidi had been devastating up until that point in the contest, taking four wickets in his first three overs. But Suryakumar hit back, hooking a short ball way over fine leg for six.

Despite the right-hander’s excellence, the Proteas were kept to an under-par 133-9.
