New Zealand v Pakistan, live updates: T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final

2022-11-09 17:05:00 IST: Mohammad Rizwan is Player of the Match. That is it from here tonight, join us tomorrow for the second semi-final, between India and England at the Adelaide Oval.

2022-11-09 17:02:00 IST: On a pitch where the Pakistan bowlers adapted beautifully, the New Zealand fast bowlers struggled, and Pakistan virtually sealed the match within the powerplay and completed the chase without taking risks. There was the odd hiccup – both Babar and Rizwan got out – but Haris, unperturbed by all that, saw Pakistan home.
Rizwan 57(43) Babar 53(42) Haris 30(26) Shan 3*(4) Iftikhar 0*(0) Boult 4-0-33-2 Southee 3.1-0-24-0 Ferguson 4-0-37-0 Santner 4-0-26-1 Sodhi 4-0-26-0.

2022-11-09 16:57:00 IST Pakistan win by 7 wickets with 5 to spare: Southee to bowl the last over, and he starts with a wide down the leg side. The scores are level, and Shan pushes the next ball down the ground to pick up the winning run. Pakistan reach a men’s T20 World Cup final after 13 years.

2022-11-09 16:55:00 IST Pakistan 151-3 (19) need 2 in 6: Santner in his last over. Haris top-edges a reverse-sweep, and Sodhi drops a diving catch at short-third (it was difficult). The fifth ball spins into and through Shan, beats Conway, and they run three byes. The fine-leg is inside the circle, Haris tries to turn the ball over him but fails, and Pakistan lose a very late wicket. Mohammad Haris c Finn Allen b Mitchell Santner 30(26)!

2022-11-09 16:49:00 IST Pakistan 145-2 (18) need 8 in 12: Shan is here, so is Ferguson. Haris misses the first ball, and Shan sprints for a bye, and gives the strike back off the next ball. The fourth ball is on the leg-stump, but Haris has moved away already, he times this beautifully through extra-cover for four. Ferguson jams the next ball short, Haris sends it soaring somewhere over the square-leg fence, that has landed somewhere in the stands!

2022-11-09 16:44:00 IST Pakistan 132-2 (17) need 21 in 18: Boult in his last over. Haris picks up two with a flick, but Boult beats him with a slow bouncer. They appeal for an LBW off the next ball, not out, and they do not have reviews left. Pakistan run a leg-bye. Rizwan drives the fourth ball to long-on and runs two. Now, out of nowhere, the last ball leads to drama. It is a high full toss (the umpires do not call it), Rizwan goes for the shot, and is caught brilliantly at deep extra-cover. To top all this, there is a run out at the non-striker’s end, so New Zealand will have a wicket anyway. It is not high enough, and Rizwan is caught. Mohammad Rizwan c Glenn Phillips b Trent Boult 57(43)!

2022-11-09 16:37:00 IST Pakistan 127-1 (16) need 26 in 24: Santner drops Haris. Short, Haris cuts, the ball goes to backward point, and slips out, just like that. Haris glances the next ball for two. They get six off the over.

2022-11-09 16:33:00 IST Pakistan 122-1 (15) need 31 in 30: Santner. Haris chips the first ball over mid-off for two. Plays a bizarre swipe to long-on, runs a single, has probably pulled a muscle – or not. He is fine. Rizwan sweeps the next ball for three. Nine off the over.

2022-11-09 16:29:00 IST Pakistan 113-1 (14) need 40 in 36: Sodhi to bowl out. Haris tries to reverse sweep the first ball (why?), it hits the pads, New Zealand appeal and review. Not out, and New Zealand lose their last review. Rizwan runs a single off the fourth ball, to bring up his fifty. Four off the over, Sodhi 4-0-26-0.

2022-11-09 16:25:00 IST Pakistan 109-1 (13) need 43 in 42: It is Haris, he likes to get going straight away. He blocks the first ball, and casually sends the second ball – it is overpitched – through mid-off for four.

2022-11-09 16:22:00 IST Pakistan 105-1 (12.4) need 48 in 44: Boult, and he strikes. There is a fielder at long-on but for some reason Babar wants to clear him, and picks him out with pinpoint precision. Babar Azam c Daryl Mitchell b Trent Boult 53(42)!

2022-11-09 16:19:00 IST Pakistan 102-0 (12) need 51 in 48: Sodhi continues. He beats Rizwan once, but that is all the joy New Zealand gets as they pick up five, congratulating each other on yet another century stand. Five singles off the over.

2022-11-09 16:14:00 IST Pakistan 97-0 (11) need 56 in 54: Ferguson. New Zealand somehow need a wicket, but Pakistan do not need to take risks. The fourth ball is a long-hop, and Babar calmly pulls for four. He flicks the last ball, Babar flicks, the throw is slightly delayed, and they get two, that is Babar’s fifty.

2022-11-09 16:08:00 IST Pakistan 87-0 (10) need 66 in 60: Boult misses a run out. Babar pushes to point and sets off, Boult misses the direct hit at the non-striker’s end, he would have been gone. Rizwan sweeps the next ball for three, that is superb running. And now Babar plays a delectable cut past backward point for four, and again for two. That is drinks.

2022-11-09 16:03:00 IST Pakistan 75-0 (9) need 78 in 66: The pitch is slow, Santner is not allowing width, but the astute Rizwan brings out the sweep. Two runs there, and two more with a pull towards deep mid-wicket, thanks to a fumble.

2022-11-09 16:00:00 IST Pakistan 68-0 (8) need 85 in 72: Sodhi. As with Santner, they can take their time, so they pick up five singles in the over. Nothing to be concerned about barring perhaps the ball that Rizwan did not time well.

2022-11-09 15:57:00 IST Pakistan 63-0 (7) need 90 in 78: Santner. Pakistan can afford to pick up singles, which they do, three off the first four balls. The fifth ball is short, and Babar cuts for four. Santner now beats the bat, it hits the pad, Williamson takes a late review. It would have missed the stumps, New Zealand lose a review, and Pakistan have run a leg-bye.

2022-11-09 15:51:00 IST Pakistan 55-0 (6) need 98 in 84: Ferguson bounces, Babar top-edges the hook, but this is Pakistan’s day, the ball soars over Conway for four. Pakistan have completely dominated the powerplay here, what can the New Zealand spinners do on this slow pitch?

2022-11-09 15:48:00 IST Pakistan 47-0 (5) need 106 in 90: Change of ends for Southee, and Rizwan sends him packing to the mid-wicket fence, not once but twice in a row. They run a single, Southee strays in line, Babar casually flicks him behind square for four. Pakistan are cruising here.

2022-11-09 15:43:00 IST Pakistan 32-0 (4) need 121 in 96: That is the Babar this World Cup missed! Ferguson replaces Southee, and Babar drives the first ball straight past him for four. Eight off the over, New Zealand need to break through here or it will be too late.

2022-11-09 15:39:00 IST Pakistan 24-0 (3) need 129 in 102: Finally some timing from Babar. Boult bowls outside off, and Babar plays an exquisite square-drive for four. The fourth ball is slower on the stumps, Rizwan shuffles across quickly and leg-glances it – the fine-leg is up – delightful shot for four. He dispatches the last ball of the over past point for four more, Pakistan have this under control.

2022-11-09 15:34:00 IST Pakistan 9-0 (2) need 144 in 108: Southee at the other end. Rizwan pushes the second ball to mid-on and gets a run, Babar is back on strike. He has been out of form, but the target is 153, and he can play himself in. The fourth ball is down the leg, not a wide, probably touched Babar’s pad, probably not. Babar keeps the strike with a single to mid-on.

2022-11-09 15:30:00 IST Pakistan 7-0 (1) need 146 in 114: We are back, and Rizwan will be on strike first ball. Creams it through cover for four, and Pakistan are off. Gets a single off the third ball, and Boult finds Babar’s edge off the fourth, Conway dives to his left – and drops it! Seven off the over.

2022-11-09 15:20:00 IST: New Zealand 152-4 (20): Allen 4(3) Conway 21(20) Williamson 46(42) Phillips 6(8) Mitchell 53*(35) Neesham 16*(12) Shaheen 4-0-24-2 Naseem 4-0-30-0 Haris 4-0-32-0 Wasim 2-0-15-0 Shadab 4-0-33-0 Nawaz 2-0-12-1

2022-11-09 15:18:00 IST: New Zealand 152-4 (20): The pitch is more of the kind you see in the UAE, not Australia, slightly slow, and the Pakistan bowlers used the pitch pretty well by taking the pace off the ball. Mitchell batted beautifully for his fifty, but this is a target in the Babar-Rizwan territory.

2022-11-09 15:15:00 IST: New Zealand 152-4 (20): Naseem begins with a yorker that Neesham pushes for two. Naseem responds with a slow bouncer, Neesham reads it wrong, misses, somehow picks up a bye. Mitchell gets a run to deep mid-wicket. Naseem bowls a yorker, Neesham misses, they find a leg-bye. Mitchell goes for the slog, mistimes it completely, the ball balloons to the empty mid-wicket, they run two. Mitchell misses the last ball, they run a bye, and that is that. Naseem bowls a terrific last over to finish with 4-0-30-0.

2022-11-09 15:10:00 IST: New Zealand 144-4 (19): Rauf takes the pace off as well, Neesham gets a run. Mitchell drills the second ball down the ground for two. A leg-bye off the third ball brings Neesham on strike, and finally Neesham gets a boundary with a flick behind square for four. Mitchell pushes the last ball towards mid-wicket to run two, that is his fifty, in 32 balls, top innings. Haris finishes with 4-0-32-0.

2022-11-09 15:04:00 IST: New Zealand 133-4 (18): Naseem starts with a slower ball. Mitchell reads it, waits for it, and bunts it over extra-cover for four. He pushes the fourth ball to long-on, there is enough time for two. Naseem continues to keep taking the pace off, just six off the last five balls, ten off the over.

2022-11-09 15:00:00 IST: New Zealand 123-4 (17): Neesham. Shaheen bowls a low full-toss, no run. The next ball has some width outside off, and Neesham places it past cover for two. Another full-toss from Shaheen, Neesham flicks for two. The next ball, Neesham pushes to the left of long-on, just seven off the over, Shaheen finishes with 4-0-24-2.

2022-11-09 14:56:00 IST: New Zealand 117-4 (16.2): Shaheen cleans up Williamson. Williamson tries to flick, perhaps a premeditated shot, virtually completes his shot by the time the ball reaches him, and is clean bowled. Kane Williamson b Shaheen Shah Afridi 46(42)!

2022-11-09 14:53:00 IST: New Zealand 116-3 (16): Haris misses a run out. Williamson pushes to long-on, they want two, Haris does not collect the ball cleanly, Mitchell was miles outside. Mitchell goes after the third ball, no timing but it clears the mid-off who is running backwards. Haris responds with a yorker, Mitchell pushes it to long-on and runs two. The next ball, Mitchell guides past backward point, two more. He tries to scoop the last ball, edges, they get a run, 10 off the over.

2022-11-09 14:48:00 IST: New Zealand 106-3 (15): Shaheen is back. Angles the first ball away to beat Williamson, cramps him for room with a yorker, but the nimble-footed Williamson shuffles across and flicks the third ball for four. Three more singles off that over, Pakistan will be happy with that.

2022-11-09 14:44:00 IST: New Zealand 99-3 (14): Change of end for Shadab. One, one, one, one, you can sense something brewing, and Mitchell steps out to loft one straight into the stands, but Shadab does well to beat the bat with the last ball.

2022-11-09 14:39:00 IST: New Zealand 89-3 (13): Wasim replaces Shadab. Williamson has decided to target him, short outside off, Williamson swishes across the line against the first ball, it is a six over mid-wicket. The second ball is slower, hits Williamson on the pad, Erasmus says no, they review. Pitched outside off, impact in line, but too high, Pakistan lose a review. Wasim follows with a fast yorker, they appeal half-heartedly. Just three singles off the last five balls, New Zealand are yet to cut loose.

2022-11-09 14:33:oo IST: New Zealand 81-3 (12): Naseem replaces Nawaz, Pakistan want to break through now. He has bowled one over so far. The first ball is a slow bouncer, Mitchell is early on the hook, they get a run. Williamson flicks the fourth ball well to pick up two, Mitchell gets two from long-on as well, but this is overall a fine over.

2022-11-09 14:29:00 IST: New Zealand 73-3 (11): We are back after drinks, and Mitchell has decided to take on Shadab. The second ball is short, he cuts, the edge runs for four. He picks up two twos, then lofts one straight, to the left of long-on, for four. New Zealand are going for it.

2022-11-09 14:22:00 IST: New Zealand 59-3 (10): Nawaz. The Pakistan spinners are wheeling through the overs too quickly, too economically for New Zealand’s comfort. This was supposed to be Pakistan’s weakness, but the lack of pace of the pitch has converted it to their strength.

2022-11-09 14:19:00 IST: New Zealand 52-3 (9): Shadab. Mitchell pushes to cover-point and sets off, and the fielder misses a direct hit at the non-striker’s end, he would have been gone. This is superb bowling from Pakistan, the spinners taking the pace off.

2022-11-09 14:16:00 IST: New Zealand 49-3 (8): Nawaz. This is a slightly slow pitch, and Pakistan are rightly bowling their two spinners in tandem. If they can get through the middle overs without conceding too many, their heavy artillery will return at the death. Phillips pushes one back to Nawaz, Williamson is outside the crease, but Nawaz does not risk it. Williamson pushes the fourth ball through mid-wicket – the slowness allows him to – and runs two. Phillips faces the last ball, tries to turn it towards leg, it is slightly slower than he anticipates, and the ball lobs back to Nawaz, gone! Glenn Phillips c & b Mohammad Nawaz 6(8)!

2022-11-09 14:10:00 IST: New Zealand 44-2 (7): Phillips joins Williamson, the right-handers are together, the powerplay is done, so it is Shadab. The third ball is short, and Phillips cuts it for four, but Shadab does well to take the pace off the ball thereafter, three dots, six off the over.

2022-11-09 14:06:00 IST: New Zealand 38-2 (6): Someone had to go after the bowling, and it is Conway. Thrashes Rauf over extra-cover for four. Haris pulls things back, conceding two singles, but Conway pulls the fourth ball as well, picking up two. Rauf alters his length, Conway defends. The last ball, he pushes to mid-off and sets off, Shadab throws the stumps with a direct hit, he is gone! Devon Conway run out (Shadab Khan) 21(20)!

2022-11-09 14:00:00 IST: New Zealand 30-1 (5): Wasim for Shaheen. Accurate to begin with, three excellent balls resulting in singles. The fourth ball is slightly down the leg, and Williamson picks up two with a flick. That is all they get, five singles, one two, seven off the over.

2022-11-09 13:55:00 IST: New Zealand 23-1 (4): Rauf now. Williamson drives the first ball, but Shadab at mid-on stops it with a full-length drive to his left, they run two. Rauf follows it up with five excellent balls, and New Zealand are unable to break the shackles.

2022-11-09 13:49:00 IST: New Zealand 19-1 (3): Shaheen pitches outside off, and Williamson reaches out to push it. The ball probably stops on him, the ball is in the air but in the gap, so they run three. Conway misses the next ball, they appeal, but this is missing leg, and Erasmus is not remotely interested. Conway steps out, Shaheen holds back the length, the pull gets him a run. New Zealand are in no mood to concede the powerplay to Pakistan.

2022-11-09 13:44:00 IST: New Zealand 14-1 (2): Conway comes to the party. Naseem begins well, with a nice off-stump line, keeping Conway in check for three balls, but the moment he pitches short, Conway pulls emphatically for four. There is drama off the next ball, Conway defends off the back foot and tries to take a single before realising that the ball was rolling towards the stumps. He makes it back, then lofts the next ball over mid-on for four. Not well timed, but enough to clear the circle.

2022-11-09 13:39:00 IST: New Zealand 6-1 (1): Williamson is here, he pushes the first ball towards leg and gets off strike. Conway, too, opens his account with a single to mid-off. Williamson swings and misses, that is an interesting first over.

2022-11-09 13:36:00 IST: New Zealand 4-1 (0.3): Shaheen pitches up the first ball, and Allen drills it down the ground for four. Shaheen backs himself, pitches up the next ball as well, there is a HUGE appeal, Erasmus takes his time but gives him out. Allen consults with Conway before the referral. There is an inside edge, he survives. Shaheen does it again, virtually same line and length, hits pads once again, Erasmus rules him out again (doesn’t wait as much). Another review. No edge this time, and he is plumb. OUT! Finn Allen LBW b Shaheen Shah Afridi 4(3)!

2022-11-09 13:07:00 IST: New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Devon Conway (wk), Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult. Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Haris, Shan Masood, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Shah Afridi.

2022-11-09 13:05:00 IST: New Zealand win the toss and elect to bat. The team batting first has won five out of six matches here in this World Cup. Babar would have wanted to bat first too. Both teams are unchanged.

2022-11-09 12:58:00 IST: The pitch looks firm. Remember, this is the same venue where New Zealand posted 200-3 against Australia, South Africa 205-5 against Bangladesh, and, after being 48-4, Pakistan 185-9 against South Africa. Do not rule out a runfest.

2022-11-09 12:24:00 IST: We are less than an hour away from the toss. New Zealand had started their tournament brilliantly with an 89-run thrashing of Australia. They did not concede the advantage, and finished at the top of Group 1 despite finishing with the same points as England and Australia. Pakistan, on the other hand, were virtually down and out following defeats against India and Zimbabwe. But they bounced back with three wins on the trot, and made it to the top four as the Netherlands defeated South Africa.

Hello and welcome to the live blog for the Pakistan v New Zealand T20 World Cup semi-final in Sydney. Both teams reached the semis in 2021 as well; New Zealand then beat England to advance to the final, while Pakistan were defeated by eventual champions Australia in the semis.
