India win! A big six to finish things off.
Just four runs to go. and KL Rahul perishes, but not before lighting up Dubai with his fiery strokes. In comes Suryakumar.
50 off just 18 balls for KL Rahul!
Update: With 16 runs needed. Rohit Sharma falls to a brilliant yorker from Wheal. Doesn’t really budge India from their rapid pursuit of the target.
These two are really going all out. Anything in their range, and above and beyond it is being smashed about.
Reminder: India needs to chase this down inside 8.5 overs to go past New Zealand’s NRR, and under 7.1 to go past Afghanistan’s.
Over 3, India 39-0, Openers looking to wrap things up in style
And Rohit gets into the same mode too. Carves one in style over extra cover. There are Indian fans dancing in the stands, the drums and conches are out. It’s all happy and blue again.
KL Rahul: Strike-rate of 237.50. Not bad, not bad.
Lovely strokeplay from Rahul here. Just stands tall and pummels the ball over the infield. It’s like we’re watching the IPL beast in full display.
Over 2, India 23-0, Rahul gets into ‘attack’ mode
Brisk start for India already. Rahul with a couple of delightful aerial strokes to start off the proceedings. In no time, India have reached 23.
For all mathematics (and Indian team) fans:
Match situation if India chase in:
43 balls: NRR better than AFG
53 balls: NRR better than NZ
60 balls: NRR improves to 1.155
72 balls: NRR improves to 0.934
96 balls: NRR improves to 0.527BUT, #AFG need to beat #NZ pic.twitter.com/hI0ZNpoW9Y

Over 1, India 8-0, Rohit-Rahul look for quick start
And, Rohit brings out his trademark inside-out scoop over the cover region. First boundary for India. They’ll want plenty more.
Rohit hasn’t been in the best of form overall in this World Cup, but looked in good touch against Afghanistan in the last game. Here, they’ll both be itching for a big start. For India to go through, it’s imperative that they bring their run-rate up.
19.40 local time: Right then, we’re back as promised. So are Rohit and Rahul on the field, alongside the Scotland team. Spin to start with, as Mark Watt as the new ball. What a tournament it has been for him.
How quickly can they hunt this down? We will be back with the chase in ten minutes.
Yorker No. (I’ve lost count). Bumrah with this one. And India have dismissed Scotland for 85.
Oh no, a flurry of wickets, and Scotland are folding real fast!
Another one, another one, another bites the dust…
Move aside, Bumrah. Yorker king Shami is here! Team hat-trick for India. Three yorkers: two bowled, one run-out.
First up, thunderous yorker, and MacLeod’s slow resistance ends. He follows it with another yorker, and a mix-up ensues, with Kishan jogging calmly to whip the bails. And then, Evans succumbs to a third yorker.
Over 16, Scotland 81-6, Batters crawl towards 100
Ooh, missed stumping from Pant there! Watt tries to charge down to Ashwin, who slips one well outside off stump. Pant is unable to gather it cleanly.
I wonder though, is this when Kohli should be more attacking with his field placements, and probably have people around the bat? Everyone’s pushed back to the boundary line with a No.8 batting. Maybe, they could have stationed a slip or a short-leg.
With five overs to go, the run-rate stands at 4.67, and Scotland are realistically staring at a sub-100 collapse. Ashwin has been smartly switching between his off-spinners, arm ball and carrom ball.
Over 14, Scotland 64-6, Ashwin opens his account
Oh, he’s got one. Greaves tried to smash him out of the park, but could go only as far as long-off.
Really, Scotland hasn’t been able to use their feet very well against India’s spinners, finding it difficult to adjust to the constant change of lengths and lines.
Close LBW shout! Extra bounce saves Greaves. Ashwin really knows how to stifle batters, squeezing out all the runs out of them with his variations. They’ve got three fielders in the deep, trying to compensate for any sweep strokes.
R Ashwin is back in the attack, hoping to carve into the wickets tally himself. Munsey attacked him with ease, but now that he’s gone, it could be a different ball game.
Over 13, Scotland 61-5, India continue to extend pressure
Bumrah from the other side, back with his bursts of excellence. MacLeod has ambled to a rather slow 11 off 22, as he looks to provide a semblance of fight from one end. For India, it’s an opportunity to quickly slither into the tail, and wrap this up quickly.
Jadeja takes three!
Oh, he’s on a roll. And it’s Leask, who was showing signs of some activity, trying an expansive sweep shot. They’re now five down, with the tail starting to appear in the distance.
Jadeja’s current figures 3.2-0-7-3. Delightful.
Over 11, Scotland 57-4, Leask looks to take initiative
A couple of boundaries off Shami for Leask, who tries to get Scotland’s innings back on track. It’s still far, far away from where it would like to be. Meanwhile, Jadeja continues to thunder in from one end.
10 overs done – Scotland 44-4
Okay, it’s the halfway mark of the first innings, and it’s been all about India’s spinners. Scotland’s batters never really got going against them, as the spinners stuck to their lines, slowly chipping away after Bumrah had put the initial pressure. There’s a lot left for the middle order to do from here. Can they take them somewhere close to 110-120?
How many can you play out though? There’s also Chakravarthy and Ashwin, one after another. So far, more than six overs worth of deliveries (31 balls) have been dot balls.
Right now, they’ve kept a fielder in the deep at deep point and deep extra cover for Jadeja, with one at midwicket, square leg and fine leg. The Scotland batters aren’t really trying to attack Jadeja though, and are happy to play him out.
Mind you, there have not been any boundaries from the Scotland team barring Munsey’s early assault so far.
Munsey 24
Coetzer 1
Cross 2
Berrington 0
Barring Munsey’s brief cameo, Scotland have been pretty much trapped in the guile of India’s spin.
Over 7, Scotland 29-4, Jadeja strikes!
What a delivery! On the middle stump, turns just enough to beat the bat, and goes through to demolish the stumps. Scotland succumb further, as he traps Cross in front of the stumps.
Shami enters the stage, and snares one!
On the legs again, and Munsey tries to slay it with some power over the mid-on fielder’s head. The ball doesn’t get elevation, and only darts towards Hardik Pandya at mid-on, not over him, and he latches onto it with ease. The danger man is gone. Time to rejoice, India fans.
For those who might be unaware, Munsey has a strike-rate of 150.24 in 49 T20Is before this, while his overall T20 strike-rate stands at 151. Really, a damaging weapon to have at the top of the order.
That’s a good way to put it.
Over 4, Scotland 25-1, Munsey on the charge
A couple of delectable boundaries past third man, in his typical reverse-sweeping fashion, to end the over.
Ashwin from the other end now. This will be really interesting. Munsey is looking to attack him though: first sweeeps him, then drills him through the covers. This will really be an interesting battle, as Ashwin historically loves bowling to left-handers.
Over 3, Scotland 13-1, Bumrah on song
Exceptional bowling by Bumrah. He’s mixing up his pace so cleverly. Rolls his wrists again, and Cross almost lobs the ball to point. Suryakumar dives in front, but it falls just short.
Bumrah gives India their first!
Slower ball – an off-cutter really, right on the stumps, and Coetzer is completely confounded. Tries to fish at it, ends up getting his stumps splattered all over the place.
Over 2, Scotland 13-0, Munsey on the attack, but India keep it tight
Munsey showing his range here. After crunching a wristy flick, he turns his bat and sends one reverse past short third man. Kohli will be closely following the shot-selection though: usually, batters get out trying to attack Chakravarthy, which was really his template in the IPL.
Varun Chakravarthy from the other end, testing the batters upfront. He underwent a fitness test just last night.
Over 1, Scotland 8-0, Munsey shows his power
Munsey has had enough of the full stuff. On his pads, and he drills it over midwicket. As we said, he looooves the leg side. Six to end the over.
He sends in another thunderbolt to Coetzer first ball. Going down leg, but one fiery yorker that was. He’s really kept it tight in the first over.
Fine leg and third man are out for Munsey, who loves the leg-side so much. Bumrah is operating in the ‘full’ channel, drilling the ball towards the batter’s toes and keeping it fast and straight here.
First ball, yorker. Bumrah has made his intentions absolutely clear here!
And we begin!
The India players are out in the middle. The Scotland team are taking the knee, so is the Indian team.
The flags are in place, and the team anthems are being played now. We’re minutes away from live action.
So, no place for Shardul Thakur in India’s XI today. They’ve gone with three spinners, as they look for a big win here and improve their net run-rate considerably.
Scotland XI: Coetzer, Munsey, Cross, Berrington, MacLeod, Leask, Greaves, Watt, Sharif, Evans, Wheal.
So, Chakravarthy makes his way in for a three-pronged spin attack. He’s likely to operate in the powerplays.
India XI: Rohit, KL, Kohli, SKY, Pant, Pandya, Jadeja, Ashwin, Shami, Bumrah, Chakravarthy.
Finally, Kohli wins the toss after a long streak of losses. Their aim will be to knock Scotland over quickly, and then hunt the target down as rapidly as possible.
On his birthday, Kohli wins the toss and opts to field first.
Toss time: We’re all set for the toss.
We’re moments away from the toss. Birthday boy Virat Kohli is all kitted up, giving catching practice to Rishabh Pant by the side of the pitch.
Reminder: India needs to win today’s game, and the Namibia one to stand a chance of qualifying to the semi-finals.
Bumrah is so good even in practice (well, practice makes him perfect). Destroying the base of the stumps with his fiery pace. Ashwin follows him, twirling his arm around as he revises his crafty off-spin. There’s Varun Chakravarthy practising too – is India thinking of playing three spinners?
A small group of India players are playing a round of keepy-uppies by the side of the pitch, while the bowlers are turning their arm around with mentor MS Dhoni keeping to them. A shortened run-up is what some of the quicks are bowling with as they loosen their limbs.
17:00 local time: Just about half an hour to go for the toss, and we’ve got both teams practising on either side of the main strip.
We’re stationed in the press box inside the Dubai International Stadium, and the final preparations are being done before both teams take to the ground for practice. Remember to keep a track of the New Zealand v Namibia game too – Namibia have started well in their chase, and it could go a long way in helping India if they notch up a win.
16:00 local time: Just under two hours to go for live action to begin. The Scotland team have reached the venue, and the broadcast paraphernalia is being put in place.
We will be providing you live updates from the stadium, with commentary, real-time analysis and scores. The match, being played at the Dubai International Stadium, could go a long way in determining who goes to the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final from Group 2.
2021-11-05, 10:50: Hi, this is Aadya Sharma, signing in from Dubai to take you through the live coverage of the India-Scotland match, set to begin in just over three hours from now.
Here’s how India can still qualify for the semi-final.
Scotland, on the other hand, have lost all three games of the Super 12, and are all but eliminated from the competition. However, they ran New Zealand close in their last match and will hope to cause an upset.
