Watch: Cameron Bancroft takes astonishing full-stretch catch off pull shot at short leg in Sheffield Shield

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Western Australia opener Cameron Bancroft takes a screamer off a pull shot at short leg on Day 4 of a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria on October 7.

Bancroft is no alien when it comes to pulling off spectacular catches at short leg. Steve Waugh had once hailed him as the best bat-pad fielder he had ever seen, and Bancroft lived up to the accolades here.

Coming to ball the penultimate ball of the 74th over, left-arm seamer Liam Haskett targeted the ribs of Victoria captain Will Sutherland. Sutherland tried to get on top of the bounce by pulling the ball from his blind spot, but mistimed the shot.

Standing at short leg, Bancroft stretched his right hand as soon as Sutherland played the stroke. In the blink of an eye, he plucked the ball out of the thin year, pouching a one-handed stunner. His teammates, unable to believe what they saw, ran towards Bancroft to congratulate him.

Earlier, Bancroft had scored a scintillating 122 off 319 to post a first innings total of 481 in response to Victoria’s 256. Victoria team failed to recover from the first-innings deficit and lost the match by an innings and 53 runs.
