Watch: Aiden Markram brought up his hundred in sizzling style in Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s semi-final, driving his side to the final of the inaugural SA20.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape are underdogs in the SA20 betting, but with Markram in sublime form, they will have hopes of pulling off an upset.
Markram had had a quiet campaign up until the knockouts, averaging 26.67 with a strike rate below 115. But he came to the party in style when it mattered most, blitzing a 57-ball hundred to take his side to a match-winning total.
Markram entered with his side in trouble, Temba Bavuma and Adam Rossington both dismissed early by Lizaad Williams. He took his time to get set, bringing up his 50 off 40 balls, but, after another dot, raced from 50 to his century in 16 deliveries.
He saved the best stroke for last, clearing his front leg and driving handsomely over the off-side. The ball travelled flat and fast, but there was no doubt it would be six as soon as he hit it.
The milestone was celebrated vigorously, especially by Markram’s batting partner Tristan Stubbs, whose yelps of joy could be heard clearly on the TV coverage.
Markram helped push his side to 213-5, setting up a 14-run win.
