Watch: In the second over the of the second day of the Karachi Test match, Naseem Shah bowled Ish Sodhi with a beautiful delivery.
After a draw in the first Test, at the National Stadium, New Zealand and Pakistan met again at the same venue for the decider of the two-match series. Placed comfortably at 234-1 on the first day after winning the toss, New Zealand slumped to 279-6 before Tom Blundell and Sodhi took them to 309-6 by stumps.
Naseem, returning to the XI after missing three Test matches due to a shoulder injury, had taken two of these wickets, Salman Agha three, and Abrar Ahmed one.
Mir Hamza bowled the first over of the second morning, and Blundell played out an eventless maiden. Naseem then resumed, against Sodhi, who had made a career-best of 65 in the previous Test match.
Naseem pitched up his first ball, on leg-stump. Sodhi tried to flick but missed, but there was no appeal. The second ball was pitched up as well, on the stumps. Sodhi defended this one. Naseem then held back the length a bit, and Sodhi defended again.
The fourth ball was on a length, on off-stump. Sodhi expected it to follow the direction and come at him, and tried to defend along an off-and-middle-stump line. But the ball held its line, evaded Sodhi’s bat, and clipped the top of the off-stump to end a resolute 30-run partnership.
Sodhi fell for 11. Blundell got to his fifty but was soon bowled by Abrar for 51, who also had Tim Southee stumped for 10. New Zealand were 345-9 at that point, but No.10 Matt Henry blazed away to his third Test fifty, while Ajaz Patel hung on. New Zealand reached 433-9 at lunch, with Henry on 56 and Patel on 31. Naseem’s figures stand at 3-71.
