Cameron Green (174 not out) and Josh Hazlewood (22) frustrated the hosts, racking up a record 116-run last-wicket stand, the highest tenth-wicket partnership by an Australian pair. Australia ended their first innings at 383.
In reply, New Zealand lost opener Tom Latham early as Mitchell Starc castled him for five off 13 balls. What followed after Latham’s dismissal was a catastrophic run-out of their premier batter, Williamson, denting their hopes.
Facing a full ball against Starc on the last ball of the fifth over, Williamson pushed towards mid-off and set off for a run. Young, who was at the non-striker’s end, was still watching the ball before colliding with his partner midway through the pitch. Starc nearly got in the middle of it.
Marnus Labuschagne intercepted the ball, running from cover to mid-off and aimed at the non-striker’s end’s stumps as Williamson fell short of his crease to be dismissed for a duck. The last time when Williamson was run out in Tests was in 2012 at Napier against Zimbabwe.
