Watch: Kate Cross bowled a beauty of a delivery to send Shafali Verma‘s off stump cartwheeling out of the ground on day one of the Test match in Navi Mumbai.

India had already lost Smriti Mandhana in the first hour, having opted to bat first at the DY Patil Stadium. After she chopped on to her stumps off Lauren Bell to leave the home side 25-1, debutant Shatheesh Shubha joined Verma at the crease.

However, after Verma hit Bell for two fours in the eighth over of the morning, Cross made England’s second breakthrough in stunning style in the following over. Bowling from right-arm over the wicket, Cross pitched the ball just outside off stump on a good length, with the ball straightening a fraction off the surface. It snaked past Verma’s outside edge and cannoned into her off stump, uprooting it from the ground and sending it cartwheeling behind her.

That wicket left India on 47-2 less than ten overs into the match, and second debutant Jemimah Rodrigues joining Shubha in the middle.

India also named a third debutant in their starting XI with fast bowler Renuka Thakur earning her maiden Test cap. The match is the first women’s Test hosted by India since 2014, and the first between the two sides on Indian soil since 2005. It’s also England’s 100th women’s Test match.

England named two spinners in their starting XI despite the late call-up of Kirstie Gordon. Alice Capsey also couldn’t find a place in the starting lineup.
