Jaiswal was imperious on the first morning of the second Test match. After Rohit Sharma fell in the first hour of play to Shoaib Bashir and Shubman Gill nicked off to James Anderson ten minutes before Lunch, Jaiswal accelerated through the gears to play a supreme knock.
He reached his half-century with back-to-back boundaries before Lunch, slogging Bashir over deep midwicket for a six before carving him through backward point where the ball was misfielded by Rehan Ahmed on the boundary. After a period of consolidation after the break, Jaiswal picked up the pace again, putting together a 90-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer.
He hit three consecutive fours off Hartley to edge closer to the nineties, before reaching the three-figure mark four overs later. Hartley bowled a loopy ball round the wicket to the left-hander, who skipped down the track to play the ball under his eyes, swinging powerfully and sending into the stands over long on.
It’s Jaiswal’s second century in just his sixth Test, after he reached the milestone for the first time against the West Indies last year. The innings follows on from his 80 in the first innings of the first Test, where he was caught and bowled by Joe Root having looked set for a century.
The 22-year-old came fully into international consciousness during last year’s IPL, where he was Rajasthan Royals’ leading run scorer and the fifth-highest run scorer overall in the competition. He hit 124 from 62 balls against Mumbai Indians in the competition, and subsequently made his senior Test and T20I debut in 2023.
