Joe Root was widely described as England’s most threatening bowler on day two in Hyderabad and he continued that form on day three, taking two wickets in two balls to minimise India’s already substantial first innings lead.

Root opened the bowling alongside Mark Wood on day three as India looked to take their lead past 200 with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel at the crease. Their initial progress was slow as England did well to contain things.

Just six runs were scored from the first 36 minutes of the day’s play before Ben Stokes made his first bowling change of the day, bringing on Jack Leach, who is managing a knee injury, to replace the speedster Wood.

Leach’s sole over of the morning leaked nine runs before Root returned at the other end to claim England’s first and second wickets of the morning. The first wicket was that of Jadeja, who fell lbw for 87. It was a marginal call with the TV umpire Marais Erasmus eventually upholding standing umpire Chris Gaffaney’s on-field decision after considerable deliberation. Even after several replays it was unclear whether the ball struck bat or pad first. Erasmus eventually concluded, “I can not determine if it’s pad or bat first,” before going to the ball-tracker which showed the ball to be ‘umpire’s call’ on both impact and on whether or not it was on course to hit the stumps.

Root had his fourth wicket the very next ball. Bowling from around the wicket to Jasprit Bumrah, Root got the ball to pitch in line and then straighten to sneak through the gap between Bumrah’s bat and pad. India’s No. 11 Mohammed Siraj survived the hat-trick ball and saw out the rest of root’s over.

Rehan Ahmed drew the innings to a close in the following over, bowling Axar Patel for 44 with one that kept very low – an ominous sign for England’s batters who were tasked with overturning a 190-run first innings deficit. In total, England claimed the final three India first innings wickets for just 15 runs on the third morning.
