Stokes had played a brilliant knock to salvage England’s innings after they collapsed either side of Lunch. On his return from knee surgery, he accelerated before Tea and smashed consecutive sixes of Ravindra Jadeja to take him out of the attack. Having passed a half-century, he rapidly moved to 70* off 86 balls, after taking 51 balls to score his first 17 runs.
After Jadeja was taken out of the attack and with England nine down, Bumrah, who had earlier dismissed Rehan Ahmed with a slower ball which ripped off the surface, was brought on to Stokes. His first ball found the England captain’s edge, but snaked through the slips and down to the boundary for four.
His this ball, however, was an absolute beauty. With the ball coming from around the wicket, Stokes looked to give himself room, exposing his stumps and advancing slightly down the pitch. The ball pitched on middle stump on a good length and jagged off the surface at pace, hitting the top of off and and middle, pinning middle stump back.
As Bumrah reeled away in celebration, Stokes was left standing in shock at the delivery, gesturing that there was nothing he could do to play the ball. The wicket meant England were bowled out for 246 having elected to bat earlier in the day. Stokes top scored for England with 70, the next-highest batter (Bairstow) having scored 37.
