England tour of India 2024, IND vs ENG 1st Test: Team news

For India, a 16-member led by Rohit Sharma will take on England. Wicketkeeper batter Dhruv Jurel has earned his maiden international call-up and is the sole newcomer in the side. While Mohammed Shami is still nursing an ankle injury suffered during World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli has pulled out of the first two Tests citing personal reasons. Rajat Patidar has been named as Kohli’s replacement.

Jasprit Bumrah will spearhead India’s pace-cartel comprising Mohammed Siraj, Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar. However, India would likely play a spin-dominated bowling attack featuring the trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

On the eve of the series opener, the tourists have announced their starting XI. Ben Stokes has recovered from his knee surgery and is back as England’s captain. Mark Wood is the sole seamer in the team as the visitors have gone with three specialist spinners headed by Jack Leach, along with a fourth one in Joe Root. Youngster Rehan Ahmed, who is set to embark on his first India tour, will play alongside debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley from Lancashire.

Harry Brook’s unavailability due to personal reasons has made way for both Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes in the lineup. Foakes will keep wicket after a lot of speculations about who would don the gloves.

Match prediction: Who will win the 1st India vs England Test?

England’s Bazball method of playing Tests has paid them rich dividends, but the India tour holds the ultimate Litmus test for their revolutionary approach. India have a cheat code in the form of the Ashwin-Jadeja spin duo and have lost only three Tests at home since 2013. On a surface that is expected to turn soon, India will go in with the definite upper hand, but have an unpredictable challenge in front of them.
