The 23-year-old Kamboj made his IPL debut today (May 6) for Mumbai Indians. The fast bowling all-rounder from Haryana was given the new ball as he bowled the second over of the innings.
His first over went for 14 runs, which included an inside-edged boundary by Travis Head. Kamboj then came back for a second over from the opposite end, bowling the penultimate over of the powerplay.
Head pulled him for a six on the second ball of the over before getting two more runs on the fourth. Things took a dramatic turn on the fifth ball as Head’s stumps were shattered off a length ball which he looked to slog, naturally leading to jubilation from the youngster and his Mumbai teammates. The excitement didn’t last long, however, as the dreaded siren rang, signalling that Kamboj had overstepped.
Head needed no second invitation as he smashed the next ball, a free hit as well as a no ball, for four, before giving out the same treatment to the next free hit as Kamboj’s fortunes switched in a moment.
That wasn’t the end of Kamboj’s dramatic debut. He came back in the eighth over where he created another chance against Head. The left hander outside-edged a lofted shot to deep third where Nuwan Thushara dropped an easy catch, depriving Kamboj of his maiden IPL wicket for a second time.
Two balls later, he finally opened his account as Mayank Agarwal missed a length ball, only for it to crash into his stumps. Kamboj finished his spell with figures of 1-42.
