Watch: Steve Smith slips playing scoop shot, gets run out to end scratchy innings

Steve Smith run out in IND vs AUS T20I
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Steve Smith was the victim of an ugly run out during the first T20I between India and Australia today (November 23), after he slipped attempting a scoop shot and was caught inches short of his ground.

Smith reached his half-century the ball before he was dismissed, bringing up the milestone off 40 deliveries. Opening the innings for the first time in the format, he had scratched around, struggling to time the ball, while Josh Inglis powered through the India bowlers from the other end. By the 16th over of the innings, Inglis was into the 90s whereas Smith was batting on half his score.

Facing a ball from Mukesh Kumar, Smith stepped wide of his crease and scooped the ball over his shoulder, straight to the fielder at short fine leg. However, walking backwards with the momentum of his movement, Smith slipped as Inglis set off for the single at the other end.

Inglis was already two-thirds of the way down the pitch by the time Smith had regained his feet, and Prasidh Krishna was set to throw the ball in to Mukesh at the bowler’s end. Smith sprinted down the wicket and stretched to push his bat into the crease, but Mukesh was able to fling the ball at the stumps to dislodge the bails just before Smith’s bat crossed the line.

Replays showed Smith was inches short of his ground when the zing bails lit up, but he had to depart for 52 off 41 balls. Australia went on to post 208-3, with Inglis scoring a blistering 110 off 50 balls.
