Watch: Rohit Sharma fumes at Shubman Gill after getting run out for a duck on T20I return

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Rohit Sharma was left fuming at his opening partner Shubman Gill after being run out for a duck on his return to the T20I side during the first India vs Afghanistan T20I today (January 11) in Mohali.

Chasing 159, India came out to bat with Rohit and Gill opening for the first time in T20Is. Rohit, playing his first T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England, stepped down the track to Fazalhaq Farooqi and slammed a straight drive down the ground.

Afghanistan skipper Ibrahim Zadran was fielding at mid-off and he flung himself to his right to brilliantly stop Rohit’s shot. Rohit, who was already down the track, had committed to the run and kept going.

Gill, on the other hand, was caught ball-watching at the non-striker’s end as he turned his back to Rohit. By the time Gill realised, Rohit had already made his way to the non-striker’s end and Zadran had lobbed the ball back to Rahmanullah Gurbaz at the striker’s end.

Interestingly, Gill, the junior partner between the two, didn’t leave his crease to sacrifice his wicket for Rohit, who was furious as he gestured animatedly towards Gill, presumably pointing out that instead of ball-watching he should have responded to his call.

Rohit had to walk back in the end, but not before making further animated gestures showing his frustration.
