Watch: Malaysia’s medium pacer Syazrul Idrus claimed 7-8 during his team’s ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier B clash against China on Wednesday (July 26), becoming the first male bowler to pick up seven wickets in an international T20 innings.

Ahead of the clash, the best-ever T20I figures were 6-5, which was claimed by Nigeria’s Peter Aho in 2021. Overall, Colin Ackermann was the only other male player to take seven wickets in all T20s, when he finished with 7-18 during the 2019 T20 Blast.

Idrus went on to break the four-year record during his stunning feat, made even more special by the fact that all his wickets were clean bowled. He picked up the first five wickets to fall in the China innings, reducing the rivals to 17-5.

The 32-year-old had picked up 40 wickets prior to the game in 22 T20Is at an average of 13.13. He has gone wicketless only twice in his T20I career thus far, picking up three or more wickets in a game seven times.

China were ultimately bowled out for only 23, making it the third-lowest score in a men’s T20I ever. Malaysia took only 29 balls to chase the target down, with Idrus, expectedly, walking away with the Player of the Match award.
