India began their run-chase of 274 strongly with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill putting on a show. Rohit was dismissed for 46 off 40, having hit four fours and four sixes. Gill followed soon after, making it a mini-collapse for India as they went from 71-0 to 76-2.
Gill scored 26 and became the fastest batter to 2,000 ODI runs in the process. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then stitched a 52-run partnership for the third wicket before Iyer fell prey to the short ball once again as he pulled a Trent Boult bouncer straight to deep square leg.
At 128-3, New Zealand had an opening but KL Rahul joined with Kohli to stabilise the innings. The duo added 54 for the fourth wicket before Rahul was dismissed lbw on review.
Suryakumar Yadav, making his ODI World Cup debut, walked out at No.6 with India needing another 92 runs from 17.5 overs. His stay at the crease, however, was a very short one.
A full ball outside off from Boult was played towards cover by Yadav who set off for a quick single. Kohli took a few steps down the pitch from the non-striker’s end as well but then backed out and turned his back on Yadav, who by that time, had reached two-thirds of the way down.
With both batters running towards the same end, the non-striker’s, that is, Yadav decided to sacrifice his wicket as he tried to turn back and make his crease at the striker’s end. Mitchell Santner, who was fielding at cover, had thrown the ball to Boult, who then under-armed it to the wicketkeeper as Yadav was caught well short.
With that wicket, India slumped to 191-5, opening the doors further for New Zealand.
