Shubman Gill became the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in ODI history during the ongoing India-New Zealand clash at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala today (October 22).

Gill came into the match with 1,986 career runs in ODIs, needing only 14 more to reach the 2,000-run mark. He got there in the seventh over of the run-chase, caressing a drive through extra cover off Trent Boult to become the fastest batter ever to the landmark.

The record was previously held by South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who had reached 2,000 runs in his 40th ODI innings. Gill has done so in just 38, a whole two innings quicker than Amla.

Having made his ODI debut in 2019 when he played two ODIs against New Zealand, Gill has transformed his game in the white-ball formats and has had a brilliant last couple of years.

Since 2022, his ODI run-tally reads 1,961 runs from just 35 innings with an average of 70.03 and a strike rate of 104.08 at the time of writing. Among the 35 innings, he has crossed fifty 16 times, including six centuries and a double century.

Such has been Gill’s dominance in the ODI format in his young career so far that he tops the list of highest batting averages for batters with more than two thousand runs in the formats. In fact, he is the only one in the list to average more than 60 (64.82 at the time of writing). The second person on the list is none other than Virat Kohli, one of the all-time greats of the format with an average of 58 spread across 286 games.

Gill had a tough start to the 2023 World Cup, missing the first two matches due to dengue, but has recovered quickly and has come back strong. He scored a fifty against Bangladesh in Pune and would be looking to add to his contributions through the course of the tournament.

In the ongoing game between India and New Zealand, Gill was dismissed for 26 off 31 balls.
