Watch: Rohit Sharma danced down the track to hit Trent Boult for a six over long off in the third over of India’s innings in the first semi-final of the 2023 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today (November 15).

India won a crucial toss in the first semi-final against New Zealand and chose to bat first. Both teams went in unchanged. Staying true to his attacking approach all through the World Cup, Rohit didn’t waste any time in getting going.

The first ball of the match, bowled by Trent Boult, was flicked past mid-wicket for a couple by Rohit. The first boundary came a couple of balls later, another flick over mid-wicket, followed by an extra cover drive. By the end of the first over, India had reached 10-0.

Shubman Gill then hit another couple of boundaries off Tim Southee in the second over to carry the momentum forward, before Rohit hit India’s first maximum in the third.

Having found no real movement in the air or off the surface, Boult changed to round the wicket on the third ball of the over. Rohit took the opportunity to put the pressure right back on as he stepped down the track, launching a full ball on off stump over long-off for six.

That got him going as by the end of the sixth over, he hit three more sixes as India raced off to 58-0. It marked a stark contrast from India’s semi-final powerplay in 2019, again against New Zealand. In that game, they struggled to 24-4 by the end of the first ten overs and eventually went on to lose a close-fought match.
