Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first. After getting off to a strong start where the openers Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan Tamim added 93 for the first wicket, their innings went nowhere as they started losing regular wickets.
From 93-0, they collapsed to 137-4. A mini partnership developed between Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim before the former perished trying to pull Shardul Thakur.
The two senior pros, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah then came together and provided hope to Bangladesh fans. Both looked good before Mushfiqur’s innings was cut short by a brilliant catch by Jadeja.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled a back of length ball outside off to Mushfiqur which got big on him as he tried to keep the cut down but failed. Jadeja, who was stationed at point like he normally is, dived full-length to his right, not his natural side, and took an excellent catch with both hands.
Jadeja then proceeded to signal to the Indian fielding coach, T Dilip, asking for a medal for his catch. The Indian team has developed a recent tradition where after every game, the fielding coach gives a medal to the best fielder of the day. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have both received the medals so far in this World Cup, while Jadeja hasn’t.
Jadeja’s celebration was a nod to that, as he seemed proud of his catch and felt that it should land him the dressing room fielding medal.
