India overcame a scare in their opening World Cup game against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8. They became 2-3, but Virat Kohli and KL Rahul resurrected their innings to take them to victory in a run-chase of 200.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood rocked India early, taking three wickets inside the first two overs before Rahul, in imperious form since his return from injury, joined hands with Kohli to rebuild.
A dropped catch off Kohli by Mitchell Marsh didn’t help Australia as the Indian duo stitched a 165-run fourth-wicket partnership, the highest for India against Australia for any wicket at the World Cup.
Rahul remained unbeaten on 97, after unwittingly timing a Pat Cummins delivery too well for the winning six when he attempted a four that would have levelled the scores and taken him to 95: a six from there would have taken him to hundred.
Earlier in the day, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav – the Indian spinners – combined to take 6-104 in 30 overs as Australia were bowled out for 199. Kohli, always a livewire on the field, orchestrated the crowd like he usually does.
After the game, during the dressing-room speeches, Kohli was given a medal ensuring the right fielders were stationed at the right places. In typically extravagant manner, Kohli received the medal enthusiastically and bit it between his teeth like athletes generally do at the Olympics podium.
