Sri Lanka were bowled out for 210 in 43.3 overs after starting well in Lucknow. Starting their innings with the ball, Australia attacked straight away with Mitchell Marsh hitting a four off Lahiru Kumara’s first ball and Warner finishing the opening over with a six.
Madushanka came on for the following over and bowled a maiden to stop the run-rate climbing, before Kumara was again taken for two boundaries off his nest over. When Madushanka came back on to bowl his second, however, he brought the game back into Sri Lanka’s grasp.
He bowled Warner a back of a length ball that was angled towards the leg stump first up. Warner missed it going back on his toes to try and play the delivery, and was struck on the pad. Umpire Joel Wilson raised his finger and Warner immediately reviewed. Despite the ball looking to be angling down the leg side, ball tracking showed it to be clipping the leg stump, much to Warner’s displeasure.
Smith came into bat at No.3 and looked in all sorts of trouble against Madushanka. The first ball hit him on the pad above the knee roll, too high for an lbw shout. Smith just managed to get bat on the next, which would have been plumb if he missed, playing it out for a dot. The next two were driven out to cover for two further dots.
Off the fifth ball he faced, Madushanka bowled a full delivery which swung back into the right hander. It struck Smith in front of middle and leg, with any attempt at reviewing the decision futile. Smith had to walk off with Australia 24-2.
