Will Young bowled Mohammed Shami

Watch: Playing in his first match of the 2023 World Cup, Mohammed Shami bowled Will Young with his first ball, during the India v New Zealand match in Dharamsala.

With Hardik Pandya ruled out of the New Zealand clash at Dharamsala, India had to bring in Suryakumar Yadav to take up Pandya’s place at No.6. Since Pandya’s absence also hit India’s bowling attack significantly, they replaced Shardul Thakur with Mohammed Siraj.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled probing spells. In the fourth over, Shreyas Iyer took an excellent catch to dismiss Devon Conway (0) off Siraj. With New Zealand on 19-1 after eight overs, Rohit Sharma asked Shami to bowl his first ball of the 2023 World Cup.

Shami bowled an off-stump line, just short of a length. As the ball moved in slightly, Will Young (17) tried to play it to the off-side but inside-edged it on to the stumps instead.

The wicket took Shami’s tally in World Cup cricket to 32 wickets. He went past Anil Kumble’s tally of 31. With 44 scalps apiece, Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan are the only ones ahead of Shami, though at 28, Bumrah is not too far away.

At the time of writing, New Zealand were 34-2 after 10 overs, with Rachin Ravindra (6) and Daryl Mitchell (7) at the crease.
