Steve Smith opts not to review lbw decision, replays show impact was outside the line

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Steve Smith did not review after being given lbw by Jasprit Bumrah, but replays later showed that the impact was outside the off stump in the 2023 World Cup final.

Australia scored 15 runs in the first over in a run chase of 241 before Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah picked a wicket each, leaving them at 41-2 in 4.3 overs. Smith, who has not had a great World Cup, scoring only two fifties in the tournament, walked out to bat at No.4 but started tentatively, scoring four of his first eight balls.

Next up was a slower ball by Bumrah, which Smith missed completely. It hit him on his pad, and the Indian team went up in appeal. After being given out and consulting with non-striker Travis Head, Smith decided not to review it as he walked off for a nine-ball four to leave Bumrah and the fans in absolute joy.

Replays later showed that had Smith reviewed, he would have survived, as the ball was pitched outside.

Australia were 47-3 by the seventh over, scoring six runs in 15 balls as the new-ball pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami put a stop to the scoring rate in the period.

The ball was likened to the slower deliveries Bumrah bowled to Mohammad Rizwan against Pakistan in the World Cup and to Shaun Marsh in the 2018 MCG Test, getting plenty of praise. Smith’s decision to not take the review was questioned at the same time.
