Fielding first, India didn’t get off to the best of starts. Mohammed Siraj conceded three boundaries in his first over as the Pakistan openers settled down nicely on the docile Ahmedabad surface.

However, timely wickets in the first half of the innings meant India didn’t allow Pakistan to run away with the game. Abdullah Shafique was the first man to go, dismissed for 20 having stitched a 41-run opening partnership with Imam-ul-Haq.

Imam was next, out for 36 having added 32 for the second wicket with Babar Azam. The third-wicket partnership between Babar and Mohammad Rizwan threatened to take the game away from India, but Siraj came back in his second spell to get rid of the Pakistan captain for 50.

Babar’s wicket sparked a collapse. From 155-2, Pakistan dropped to 171-7, losing five wickets for 16 runs. One of those included that of Rizwan, their most in-form batter.

Bumrah, bowling his second spell, produced a ripping off-cutter at pace that gripped in the surface and went through Rizwan’s bat and pad to shatter his stumps. Looking solid at 49 off 69, Pakistan were banking on Rizwan to take the game deep with the lower order and take them close to 300.

However, Bumrah’s brilliance meant that Rizwan was caught one short of a third successive 50-plus score at the World Cup, and Pakistan were into the lower order.

By the end of the 40th over, they had lost eight wickets for 187 runs, with Bumrah’s figures reading 2-19 from seven overs with one maiden. Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 191.
