India broke their New Zealand jinx at World Cups by registering their first victory over them in global tournaments across formats since the 2003 World Cup.
Winning the toss, India elected to field first, making it the fifth consecutive game where they chased at the 2023 World Cup. Following a shaky start where both openers were dismissed by the score of 19, New Zealand rebuilt courtesy of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell.
Ravindra scored 75, his third fifty-plus score of the tournament, while Mitchell scored his fifth ODI century, taking New Zealand to a strong total of 273. Mohammed Shami, playing his first game in the 2023 World Cup, shone for India with a five-for.
In response, Rohit Sharma gave India another quick start as they raced to 63-0 in the first ten overs despite Matt Henry and Trent Boult beating the bat of the Indian openers on several occasions.
However, regular wickets meant New Zealand were always in the hunt. From 182-3, India went to 191-5, opening the door for a New Zealand fightback. But a solid sixth-wicket partnership between Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja took India to safety.
Kohli tried to get to his hundred once again as he battled with the number of runs remaining in the process. This time, however, he wasn’t successful and was dismissed for 95 trying to go for a six. Jadeja finished it off with a boundary remaining unbeaten on 39 off 44.
With this victory, India now have ten points from five games and are at the top of the table.
