Mohammed Shami World Cup records
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

During his 5-54, Mohammed Shami set multiple records in the 2023 World Cup match against New Zealand in Dharamsala.

Playing his first match of the 2023 World Cup, Mohammed Shami bowled Will Young with his first ball of the day to go past Anil Kumble’s World Cup tally of 31 wickets.

With 36 scalps, Shami is now third on the list for India, behind Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan, who have 44 wickets apiece.

Shami later broke the threatening third-wicket partnership of 159 by dismissing Rachin Ravindra (75), and claimed three more wickets at the death to finish with 5-51.

He became the first Indian and ninth overall to take two or more five-wicket hauls at the World Cup (he had 5-69 against Afghanistan in 2019). Of the others, Mitchell Starc is the only one with three five-fors.

Shami is also the fourth to take five-wicket hauls in two separate World Cups, after Glenn McGrath, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Starc.

As with five-wicket hauls, Shami is now joint-second on the list of bowlers to have taken four or more wickets at the World Cup on the most occasions. He has done it five times, as has Imran Tahir: they are behind only the ubiquitous Starc (six). For India, no one else has even three.

Of bowlers with as many World Cup wickets as Shami, no one has a better average or strike rate than his 15.02 and 17.6. At the same time, his economy rate of 5.09 is the second-worst.

Among batters, Daryl Mitchell made 130, the highest score for New Zealand against India at the World Cup. In fact, Mitchell’s was only their second hundred against India, after Glenn Turner’s 114 not out in the 1975 edition.

Kuldeep Yadav returned 10-0-73-2 – the most runs he has conceded in a World Cup match. He had 1-72 from 10 overs against England at Edgbaston in 2019.

Mitchell also made the first hundred against India in the 2023 edition. He cleared Hashmatullah Shahidi’s 80 by some distance. Ravindra, too, now sits at third place for highest scores against India.

Mitchell and Ravindra’s partnership of 159 is also the best against India at this edition. Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai’s 121 is the only other century partnership against them.

New Zealand were bowled out for 273, the highest against India at the 2023 World Cup. As with the previous two records, they went past Afghanistan’s 272-8.
