Another round of the 2024 County Championship got underway with sunny skies across the country today (May 10). Here’s a roundup of all the action across both divisions.

Hampshire vs Durham

Ali Orr stole the show in Southampton. His hundred came from 168 deliveries before he was dismissed by Peter Siddle for 126. It’s his first century in a Hampshire shirt and his first in Division One since moving from Sussex at the end of last summer. Callum Parkinson was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-110, including a gem that drifted in before taking Flethca Middleton’s middle stump. Orr was ably aided by Nick Gubbins (31) and James Vince (41) as Hampshire made it to 85-1 at lunch and 210-2 at tea, before Tom Prest and Liam Dawson added 81. Hampshire closed the day on 336/4.

Worcestershire vs Kent

Off the back of a landmark victory last week against Lancashire, Kent were dismantled by Worcestershire’s Gareth Roderick (117) and Kashif Ali (72). Their commanding partnership added 136 to the total as Worcestershire made it to 210-3 at Tea. Worcestershire pressed on after the break as Roderick ground out his century and Adam Hose finished 50*. Wickets for Matt Parkinson (2-79), Joey Evison (2-39) and Wes Agar 1-77 were all there was to celebrate for Kent on what was a tough day in the field. Worcestershire will restart tomorrow on 308-5.

Lancashire vs Nottinghamshire

A Keaton Jennings 91 off 180 pushed Lancashire to 306-8 as wickets were shared around the Nottinghamshire attack. Jennings combined with Josh Bohannon (35) and George Balderson (38) to put on 60 and 107 respectively, before Tom Bruce found form. The Kiwi batter had not passed 26 previously and averaged under 10 this season, but he made a much needed 73. Wickets fell around him as Dillon Pennington took 3-46 and the game hangs in the balance.

Warwickshire vs Surrey

A strong first hour for Warwickshire was soon felled as 59-0 became 88-3 at lunch. It was a story of starts for Warwickshire as all of their top five were dismissed for scores between 17 and 36. Jordan Clark provided the spark needed for the home side, as Warwickshire skipper, Alex Davies was bowled without a shot offered. Clark went on to take 4-50 and was backed up by Kemar Roach (2-81) and Sean Abbott (2-51), Surrey’s overseas seamers. By Tea, Warwickshire had been reduced to 195/6. They inched along throughout the day and a brilliant 96* from Ed Barnard carried them to a more than respectable 318-8 at the close of play.

Sussex vs Glamorgan

Sussex never got going in Cardiff as Mir Hamza and James Harris claimed four wickets each to reduce Sussex to 140-7. Consistent wickets curtailed their chances with Fynn Hudson-Prentice top scoring with 48. 94-2 at Lunch became 186-7 by Tea but a late flurry of lower order runs propelled Sussex to 278 all out. Jack Carson and Aristides Karvelas both scored 39 as the final three wickets put on 138. Karvelas then took the wicket of Eddie Byrom as Glamorgan ended on 21-1.

Gloucestershire vs Northamptonshire

A fifty from Cameron Bancroft set Gloucestershire up in the first session before Miles Hammond went ballistic. Hammond’s first 50 came from just 55 balls and alongside Jame Bracey (33) took Gloucestershire to 222-4 at tea. Soon after the break Hammond hoisted a six over fine leg to bring up his ton, before a spectacular catch at mid-wicket by Ricardo Vasconcelos dismissed him for 112. The Indian seamer, Siddarth Kaul took an impressive 4-58. A flurry of late wickets reduced Gloucestershire from 309-5 to 338-8.
