Watch: A disastrous brain fade from Haider Ali resulted in him being stumped after he stepped out of his crease following an lbw appeal, allowing the keeper to take the bails off with the Pakistan international still out of his ground.

Haider is playing for Derbyshire in Division Two of the County Championship, and came in against Durham with his side in a strong position at 179-3. After he reached 38, he brought out a powerful sweep shot to opposition captain Scott Borthwick.

He missed the ball by some distance, the ball thumping into his pad and the fielder going up for an appeal. The lbw appeal was ignored by the standing umpire but Haider was distracted. continuing to look past fine leg where he had hoped to hit the ball.

He took a couple of steps down the wicket before turning his head to look at Brooke Guest at the non-striker’s end. Guest had already turned and was wondering back towards the non-striker’s end. The ball had dropped onto the pitch after hitting Haider on the pad, and was resting close to the stumps. As Haider realised Guest was not going to opt for a suicidal single, Durham wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson, saw his opportunity.

Haider was several strides out of his crease, and Robinson scrambled to quickly gather the ball and whip it onto the stumps. Haider made a very late effort to ground his bat, but there was no hope of saving his wicket. Thankfully, his lapse in concentration didn’t hurt Derbyshire much. They finished the day on 317-6, with Guest unbeaten on 145.
