Caught behind despite dropped catch

Watch: Karnataka’s opener Prakhar Chaturvedi was given out caught-behind despite Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper Aaradhya Yadav quite obviously shelling the catch in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy final in Bengaluru.

The Col CK Nayudu Trophy, India’s premier Under-23 red-ball tournament, saw a bizarre moment on day one (March 10) of the final between Karnataka and UP.

The home team won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers Prakhar Chaturvedi and Macneil HN started off well, putting together a fifty-plus opening partnership.

Chaturvedi was the first batter dismissed, but the manner of his dismissal raised a lot of eyebrows.

Trying to pull a short ball from right-arm seamer Kunal Tyagi, Chaturvedi got a faint tickle down to the wicketkeeper Aaradhya Yadav, who had been part of the Indian squad at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup.

He dived to his left and took the catch with both hands, but when he made contact with the ground on his way down, the ball clearly popped out of his hands and started rolling away from him.

He was quick to grab the ball while still being on the floor, but the umpire, quite shockingly, had raised his finger by then. Chaturvedi was not pleased but had to go make the long walk back having scored 33.

Karnataka finished their first innings at 358 before bowling UP out for 139. Yadav top-scored for them with 66 batting at No.4.
