During the 28th over, Umesh Yadav exploited Shreyas Iyer’s much-talked-about weakness against the short ball. He began by bowling four deliveries short of a length. Iyer left the first two deliveries, both of which shaped away, and defended the next two.
Umesh handed the sucker punch on the fifth ball. He pitched it on a good length and around off. The ball bounced more than usual, and Iyer couldn’t ride on top of it to keep it down. His feet were planted at the crease – he seemingly anticipated a short ball – and poked at it, and the thick outside edge flew to second slip.
Iyer fell cheaply for seven runs from 15 balls and Mumbai slipped to 99-4. They eventually made 224 (Umesh finished with 2-43), bowled out Vidarbha for 105, and were 48-2 in the second innings at the time of writing. The lead of 167 looks formidable.
