Ban v NZ ODI highlights: Seamers and Will Young lead rout of Bangladesh to seal series win

New Zealand secured an ODI series win over Bangladesh
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

New Zealand comfortably beat Bangladesh in the final ODI of the series yesterday (September 26), Will Young playing a vital knock of 70 runs off 80 balls to lead the visitors to a comfortable 2-0 series win – their first in the country for 15 years.

Batting first after winning the toss, Bangladesh lost both the openers – Zakir Hasan and Tanzid Hasan – in a space of 13 balls courtesy of new-ball bowlers Adam Milne and Trent Boult. They lost their third wicket at 5.2 overs after Towhid Hridoy sliced a delivery off Milne into the hands of Young who was fielding at point.

In a period of consolidation that followed, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim stitched together a 53-run partnership, taking the team’s score to 88-3 in 15 overs. Just when it looked like the home team was out of danger, Mushfiqur was dismissed in a bizarre fashion off a delivery by Milne.

The wicketkeeper-batter kicked his own stumps while trying to deflect the ball that came off an inside edge and was going to hit his stumps. Barring Shanto’s lone hand of 76 off 84, the home side never got going and was bowled out for 171 runs in 34.3 overs. Milne was the wrecker-in-chief for Lockie Ferguson’s men. He finished with figures of 6-34-4.

New Zealand made light work of the paltry target, chasing it down in 34.5 overs without any hassle. Opener Will Young top-scored with 70 runs off 80 deliveries, including 10 fours and a six. He was adjudged as the ‘Player of the match’. The tourists clinched the series 2-0, ending their 13-year losing streak in the country. They lost 0-4 in 2010 and 0-3 in 2013.
