Having chosen to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka got off to a good start with openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka stitching 63 for the first wicket before Gulbadin Naib struck thrice in quick succession.
Naib removed both openers and No.4 Sadeera Samarawickrama within the space of six overs. Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka then resurrected the Sri Lanka innings, adding 102 runs for the fourth wicket.
With Sri Lanka threatening to take the game away from Afghanistan, Rashid Khan came to their rescue. He first removed Asalanka in the 34th over, taking a diving catch off his own bowling.
Six overs later, he was handed another caught and bowled opportunity by Shanaka. This time he dropped the ball, but luckily for him and Afghanistan, the ball ricocheted off his hands to dislodge the bails at the non-striker’s end, catching Mendis, who was batting on 92, short of his crease.
It didn’t take much time for Rashid to make amends for dropping Shanaka, however. Two balls later, he ripped past the Sri Lankan captain’s attempted sweep shot, castling his stumps behind his legs and leaving Sri Lanka in a spot of bother at 227-7.
Lower order resistance from Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana meant Sri Lanka were able to get their score to 291-8. Afghanistan would need to achieve the target inside a stipulated amount of overs if they are to qualify for the Super Fours.
Rashid finished with 2-63 off his 10 overs.
