Both of India’s group-stage matches in the ongoing Asia Cup were affected by rain. Rain was predicted for their Super Four game as well, but the organisers stuck to the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the originally chosen venue.
The match began on time, and India got off to a rollicking start after Babar Azam opted to field. Rohit Sharma (56 in 49 balls, six fours, four sixes) and Shubman Gill (58 in 52 balls, 10 fours) played their shots even as Naseem Shah bowled an outstanding opening spell.
Rohit became the first cricketer to hit Shaheen Shah Afridi for six in the first over of an ODI, but Naseem tested him with an excellent spell. Gill hit six fours in 12 balls off Shaheen but he, too, rode on his luck when no one really attempted for a catch off his edge.
The Indian openers added 121 in 100 balls before Rohit hit Shadab Khan (1-45) to long-off, while Shaheen (1-37) had his revenge, having Gill caught at cover off a slower ball.
Virat Kohli (8 in 16 balls) and KL Rahul (17 in 28) were at the crease when rain washed out the day’s play, with India on 147-2 in 24.1 overs. The match will resume from that point.
