Watch: Shaheen Afridi deceives Shubman Gill with slower ball, gets him caught at cover after brisk half-century | Asia Cup 2023

Shaheen Afridi dismissed Shubman Gill with a well disguised slower delivery
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Shaheen Afridi had his revenge when he dismissed Shubman Gill with a slower ball after the latter had hit him for six boundaries in two overs earlier in the India-Pakistan match today (September 10) in Colombo.

Gill raced off to a rapid start in India’s first Super Fours game against Pakistan. He had struggled in the group stage against them, having scored 10 off 32 in Pallekele, but today came out with positive intent.

Between Afridi’s second and third overs, Gill smashed him for six boundaries ranging from cover drives to lofted straight drives to flick shots. Gill reached his fifty off 37 balls in the 13th over, making it his first half-century against Pakistan in senior international cricket.

Afridi, who was taken out of the attack after his third over, was brought back for a second spell in the 18th over of the innings, right after Shadab Khan had dismissed Rohit Sharma in the 17th. And Afridi struck gold, removing Gill to hand India a double blow.

The fifth ball of the over was a slower length ball outside off stump that Gill failed to read. He reached out for a cover drive and was too early into the shot, handing an easy catch to Salman Agha at cover. Gill’s innings came to an end for 58 off 52 balls. Given the touch he was in, Gill would be disappointed at having not converted it into a big score.

Six overs later, play was halted due to rain with India’s score reading 147-2 off 24.1 overs.
