Biography

Matthew Maynard was one of the few English cricketers to have burst onto the first-class scene with a century on debut. Soon, Maynard joined Glamorgan and went on to set thrilling records with his stylish batting.

A right-handed batsman and a wicketkeeper, Maynard become the youngest player of Glamorgan to score 1000 runs in 1986. His batting displays continued from there on and within the next two years, he was part of England’s national setup playing his first international Test against West Indies. On the domestic front, much of Glamorgan’s one-day success is credited to Maynard who was already leading the side by 1997. In 2000, he led his county to their first Lord’s Cup final appearance in 1977 and was hence recalled to the England team. Strings of poor scores resulted in him being dropped from the side. In 2004, he was signed up by England as their assistant coach and the following season, Maynard announced his retirement to focus on coaching. Maynard was appointed coach of the South African franchise, the Titans in 2012 for a period of two years.
