Biography

Angelo Mathews is one of the most talented all-rounders Sri Lanka has ever produced. A dependable middle-order batter, Mathews is also a reliable bowler and a dynamic fielder, making him a true asset in all facets of the game.

Mathews' cricketing journey began early, making a mark in Sri Lanka's youth setup following his debut in 2003. In 2005, he was entrusted with the captaincy during a tour of England. His unbeaten 123 in the third Test, though in a losing cause, caught the attention of many. Mathews further solidified his reputation with strong performances in a triangular series involving England and Bangladesh. He debuted for the Colts Cricket Club in the 2007-08 season. After a modest start, Mathews showcased his potential in his second season, amassing 696 runs at an impressive average of 58. His standout performances extended to Sri Lanka A's tour of South Africa, where he emerged as one of the key players.

In 2008, Mathews made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe. While he initially struggled to take wickets, he made an impact with the bat, scoring a half-century in just his third ODI. The following year, he earned his Test cap against Pakistan, cementing his place as a regular in Sri Lanka’s ODI setup. What sets Mathews apart is his excellent temperament and ability to assess game situations. While his bowling pace hovers around the mid-130 km/h mark, he maintains tight lines and can swing the ball under favourable conditions, proving to be a useful bowling option.

In 2013, Mathews took on greater responsibility as he was named captain of Sri Lanka’s ODI and Test teams, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene after the tour of Australia. His leadership skills extended beyond the international stage, as he was later appointed captain of the IPL franchise Pune for the tournament's sixth season.
