In total, 21 men have faced the new ball for England in Tests since the retirement of their former captain, after the 2012 home series against South Africa in which his side relinquished their hold on the No.1 Test ranking.

Of those, 18 can claim to have been picked as full-time openers, with those who weren’t including one player with a score of 78* in his only innings at the top of the order, and another who averages more than even Alastair Cook while opening.
